What a busy and exciting start to the term we have had.
In week 3 we had a very successful Grandparent's Day. How wonderful to see so many Grandparents come and be part of our junior school singing assembly and visiting the classrooms.
As part of our work leading up to Grandparent's Day the children in room 3 wrote about what makes their Grandparents special.  Here are some examples:

Last Friday room 3 had a visit from a group of Japanese students. After a waiata the Japanese students showed us how to make a range of origami objects. At the end we each sung our National Anthems.

Room 3 have been training hard for the runathon and the cross-country, focusing on keeping a steady pace and building up our stamina.

As part of our Inquiry topic this term we are learning about three New Zealand authors: Jenny Hessell, Juliette MacGiver and Joy Watson. We look forward to sharing some of our topic work with you later in the term.
We are very priviledged to have Matua Tim, a Masters of Teaching and Learning student in our classroom this term. Welcome Tim and we are all enjoying having you in room 3.

Winter Hikau

We wrote Haiku about how we feel in winter. We learned that Haiku have 3 lines of five syllables, seven syllables and five syllables. We wrote some Haiku together as a class, and some on our own. We illustrated them with pastel.

Our egg containers

As part of our Inquiry unit we have been doing in room 3 we explored how egg cartons are made, what attributes they have and how people carried eggs in the past.
We had to work together in groups to design and make a container that would hold one raw egg and keep it intact when the container was dropped from a one metre height.
We then tested our containers by dropping them from first 1.5 metres and then 2.1 metres for those that were still intact. We recorded the results and decided what we would change if we were to make it again.

To make our design better we should put more foam on the top of the egg. It was a success when we dropped it from 1.5m but when we dropped it from 2.1m it cracked because when you dropped it from a few more metres it goes further it also bounced up. I liked watching the other group`s emotions when they dropped the container. I found out the egg breaks easily when you dropped it from a certain height. I also found out the egg containers are made out of paper mache.

Our egg stayed whole when it was dropped from 1.5 metres. When the container was dropped from 2.1 metres it cracked. It cracked because the container wasn’t strong enough.
If we made another container we would make ours smaller. We would put cotton balls around the egg. We would make a little box shape.
I learnt that egg cartons are light so people can carry them. The part I liked best was dropping our egg container.

I hope that everyone has had a restful term break and enjoyed the beautiful weather that we were lucky enough to get.
What a busy time we had in term one. During the last few weeks of the term the learners had fun participating in science activities with Whaea Nicole and Miss Hill. This involved looking at different leaves and objects in the school playground, talking about the environment that these objects were found in and how they differed from each other. They then sketched the leaves a wrote a short piece of descriptive writing about them.

 The learners really enjoyed being scientists for the day.

The learners also worked on activities learning about colours, tones and colour mixing. They really enjoyed creating their own colour wheels using a combination of different materials.

We have been continuing to enjoy our swimming sessions each day. This week we will be focusing on water safety skills. We have been writing recounts about swimming and here are some for your enjoyment.
Splish, splash, splosh I was kicking in the pool. I love swimming under the water in the pool. The water was very cool and relaxing when I was floating on my back. After that I glided to the ladder. We go swimming every day. I couldn’t go underwater but now I can. I like doing freestyle in the pool.

I love going in the pool because we learn to swim. It is really fun because we glide across the pool and also we do freestyle and we use flutter boards and we do diving.  We use noodles and we do ducking under the water. We need to bring our togs every day. Me and my friends can touch the bottom. Sometimes we get to do free play and it is really fun. What I like doing in the pool is freestyle because it is cool and fun. I can go under water and I can glide I the pool.

At school we have a pool and we have swimming. I like gliding and freestyle it is cool. I can go under and blow bubbles. I can do a starfish in the water. I can go on a noodle and kick my legs. I can glide across the pool.

Diving. Yip you heard me, the sweet sound of a pool. The sound of splashing and yelling is music to my ears. Every day when I bring my togs I’m always excited to get in the pool with my googles. I like diving and ducking and gliding with a board. I love swimming it’s my favourite thing to do. Oh that is a cool pool.

For mathematics we have been focusing on ordering numbers and using our doubles to help solve addition problems. It would be great if the children could practice their counting and doubles at home.
We have also been loving our dancing sessions with the "Footsteps" dance instructors. The children have been going to a 45 minute session each Thursday morning. What great fun they are. Here are a few photos that show some of our moves.
